The facial that ruined the photos
Every year it’s the same story. A week before Karva Chauth, you book a facial or a bleach. Two days later there are red bumps, a breakout on the chin, or skin that looks more irritated than glowing. Then the photos happen.
This year, Karva Chauth falls on Thursday, 29 October. That gives you about 15 days, which is enough time to see a real difference if you start now. Ayurveda’s approach is simple: glow comes from the inside as much as from the outside. This plan covers both, step by step, without anything harsh.
Why festive-season skin looks dull
Several things hit your skin at once in October:
-
Pollution: fine dust settles on the skin, clogs pores and adds oxidative stress. Delhi has had its most polluted start to October in years.
-
Season change: the air turns dry, so skin loses moisture and looks flat.
-
Festive food: fried snacks and sweets during Navratri and Dussehra can trigger breakouts.
-
Late nights and stress: shopping, cleaning and preparations cut into sleep, and it shows.
Ayurveda links clear, radiant skin to balanced Pitta and clean rakta dhatu (blood tissue). When Pitta runs high through spicy food, heat and stress, it shows up as pimples, redness and pigmentation. The goal over these 15 days is to cool Pitta, clean the skin gently and nourish it.
Days 1–5: Clean up from the inside
-
Start the day with warm water and a few soaked raisins or a teaspoon of soaked fennel seeds.
-
Cut down on fried food, sugar and excess tea. These are the biggest breakout triggers in festive season.
-
Add cooling foods: cucumber, coconut water, pomegranate, amla and seasonal greens.
-
Drink 8–10 glasses of water. A caffeine-free herbal tea like hibiscus counts toward it.
-
Sleep by 11 pm. Skin repairs itself most during deep sleep.
On the outside, keep it simple: a gentle cleanser twice a day, a light moisturiser and sunscreen. Don’t start any new chemical peel or bleach now.
Days 6–10: The ubtan ritual
Ubtan has been part of Indian wedding and festival preparation for centuries, and for good reason. A herbal ubtan gently exfoliates, absorbs excess oil and brightens without stripping the skin.
How to use ubtan correctly:
-
Mix 1–2 teaspoons of ubtan powder with rose water (oily skin) or raw milk (dry skin) into a smooth paste.
-
Apply on a clean face and neck in an upward motion.
-
Leave it until it’s about 80% dry, around 10 minutes. Don’t let it crack completely.
-
Wet your fingers and massage in small circles as you wash it off.
-
Use it 3 times a week, not daily.
Traditional ubtan herbs include neem (for clarity), manjistha (Ayurveda’s classic skin-brightening herb), multani mitti (oil control) and haldi (glow). If you’d rather not mix your own, Bedaag Herbal Ubtan Face Scrub combines neem, manjistha and multani mitti in a ready-to-use form.
Days 11–14: Nourish and calm
-
Night face massage: 2–3 drops of almond or kumkumadi-style oil, massaged for 3 minutes, improves circulation and gives a soft glow by morning.
-
Cooling face mask once: aloe vera gel with a pinch of sandalwood powder calms any redness.
-
Keep eating clean. This is when the inside work starts to show.
For those who want inside-out support, Skin Glow & Beauty Capsules blend triphala, turmeric, moringa and aloe, traditional herbs for skin radiance. If breakouts are your main concern, Phyrosis Skin Care Syrup with neem, daru haldi and manjistha is another option. Give any supplement a few weeks; it’s a long-term habit, not an overnight fix.
Day 15 (the day before): Prep for the fast
Karva Chauth is a nirjala fast, so your skin will be without water all day. Prepare the day before:
-
Drink plenty of water and coconut water through the day.
-
Have a hydrating sargi: fruits, coconut, dry fruits, curd and a light paratha rather than only sweets and fried food.
-
Apply a thick moisturiser at night.
-
Skip any scrub or new product. Today is about calm skin.
What to avoid in the last week
-
Bleach and harsh peels: the most common cause of festive-week irritation.
-
Popping pimples: it leaves marks that last longer than the festival.
-
Trying a new product the day before: patch test anything new at least 3 days ahead.
-
Heavy makeup on unprepared skin: prep with moisturiser and primer instead.
Pimples in the last few days? Do this
Dab a little aloe vera gel or a dot of neem paste on the spot at night. Keep your hands off it. On the day, use a light concealer rather than layers of foundation. Most small pimples calm down within 2–3 days if you leave them alone.
Your glow plan by skin type
| Skin type | Ubtan mix | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Oily / acne-prone | Ubtan + rose water | Heavy creams, frequent touching |
| Dry | Ubtan + raw milk, then moisturiser | Hot water on the face, over-scrubbing |
| Combination | Rose water on T-zone, milk on cheeks | Using one product everywhere |
| Sensitive | Small amount with milk, 7–8 minutes only | Lemon, fragrance, strong scrubs |
Don’t forget hands, feet and lips
Karva Chauth photos show more than your face. Mehendi hands, feet in sandals and lips in close-ups all need a little care too:
-
Hands and feet: soak in warm water with a pinch of salt for 10 minutes twice a week, scrub gently with ubtan, then apply a thick moisturiser or ghee at night with cotton socks.
-
Lips: a tiny dab of ghee or almond oil at bedtime keeps them soft through the dry, fasting day.
-
Before mehendi: keep hands moisturised in the days before, but skip oil on the day so the colour sets well.
FAQs
Can I use ubtan every day? No. Three times a week is enough. Daily use can dry and irritate the skin.
Will this remove pigmentation in 15 days? No routine removes pigmentation that fast. You’ll see brighter, more even-looking skin; deeper pigmentation needs months and sometimes a dermatologist.
Is ubtan safe for sensitive skin? Usually, if used with milk or rose water and not rubbed hard. Patch test first behind the ear.
