Diwali Cleaning and Shoulder Pain: Lifting, Reaching and Recovery

Author’s perspective: Diwali cleaning is one of my favourite traditions, and also one of the most underrated physical workouts of the year. In a few days, we lift, reach, scrub, climb and carry more than we do in months. I have noticed that many shoulder complaints start not with a dramatic injury, but with a week of “just one more shelf”. This post is my attempt to help you enjoy a sparkling home without paying for it with a sore shoulder in November.

Why Diwali cleaning strains the shoulder

The shoulder is built for movement, but it is not built for repeated overhead work under load, especially when it is out of practice. Diwali cleaning often involves:

  • Reaching overhead to dust fans, clean cobwebs or take down curtains
  • Lifting boxes from lofts, top shelves or cupboards
  • Scrubbing walls, windows and floors with repetitive arm movements
  • Carrying heavy buckets, rugs and furniture
  • Awkward positions, such as balancing on a stool while stretching for a corner

When this happens for several hours, several days in a row, the muscles and tendons around the shoulder (especially the rotator cuff) can become strained or inflamed.

The cold-weather factor

Diwali falls in the cooler months. Cold mornings make muscles tighter, and many people start cleaning early without warming up. In Ayurveda, this season is linked with increased Vata, which is associated with stiffness and dryness in the joints. Cold, tight muscles plus sudden heavy work is a recipe for strain.

Common shoulder problems after cleaning

  • Muscle strain: soreness and tenderness that improves over a few days.
  • Rotator cuff irritation (tendinitis): pain when lifting the arm sideways or overhead, sometimes worse at night.
  • Aggravation of an existing problem: people with early frozen shoulder or arthritis may notice it suddenly getting worse.
  • Neck and upper back strain: from looking up for long periods.

Prevention: clean smart, not hard

Plan the work

  • Spread the cleaning over several days instead of one marathon.
  • Alternate heavy tasks with light ones.
  • Take a 5-minute break every 30 to 40 minutes.

Warm up first

  • Take a warm shower or apply a warm compress for 10 minutes.
  • Do gentle shoulder rolls and arm circles for 2 minutes before starting.

Reach safely

  • Use a sturdy stool or step ladder so your hands work at chest height, not above your head.
  • Use long-handled dusters and mops.
  • Keep the elbow close to your body when possible.

Lift safely

  • Bend your knees, not your back.
  • Hold the load close to your body.
  • Do not lift heavy boxes from above shoulder height alone; ask for help.
  • Split heavy loads into smaller ones.

Share the work

Diwali is a family festival. Divide tasks so that no single person does all the overhead or heavy work.

Recovery: if your shoulder already hurts

First 48 hours

  • Rest from the activity that caused the pain, but do not keep the arm completely still.
  • For a fresh strain with swelling, a cold pack wrapped in cloth for 10 to 15 minutes can help.
  • Avoid lifting or overhead work.

After 48 hours

  • Switch to warm compresses to relax the muscles.
  • Start gentle movements, such as pendulum swings and shoulder rolls.
  • Warm sesame or mustard oil massage around the shoulder can be soothing.

Daily habits

  • Sleep with a pillow supporting the arm; avoid lying on the sore side.
  • Keep the shoulder warm on cold mornings.
  • Eat warm, nourishing meals and stay hydrated.
  • Get enough sleep, which helps muscles recover.

Some people use Ayurvedic support for general body and muscle aches, such as Reliever Capsules, which contain Ashwagandha, Giloy and Harar. This is a support for comfort, not a treatment for injury.

A 5-minute post-cleaning cool-down

After each cleaning session, take five minutes to help your shoulders recover:

  1. Shoulder rolls: 10 slow circles backward, 10 forward.
  2. Chest opener: clasp your hands lightly behind your back and gently lift your chest for 3 breaths.
  3. Cross-body stretch: bring each arm across your chest and hold for 15 seconds.
  4. Neck release: gently tilt your head toward each shoulder and hold for 15 seconds.
  5. Warm water: drink a glass of warm water and sit down for a few minutes.

This simple routine reduces next-morning stiffness and makes the following day’s cleaning easier.

When it might be more than a strain

A simple strain usually improves noticeably within a week or two. See a doctor if:

  • Pain is not improving after 1 to 2 weeks
  • You cannot lift your arm, or it feels weak
  • Pain wakes you up at night regularly
  • Stiffness keeps increasing (this could be early frozen shoulder)
  • There is swelling, bruising or deformity
  • You have numbness or tingling down the arm
  • The pain started with a fall from a stool or ladder
  • You have left shoulder or arm pain with chest pain, sweating or breathlessness. This may be a heart emergency, not a cleaning strain. Call 108 or go to hospital immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use ice or heat?

Ice may help in the first day or two after a fresh strain with swelling. After that, warmth usually helps more.

Can I keep cleaning with a sore shoulder?

Switch to tasks that do not involve lifting or reaching overhead, and let the shoulder rest from the activity that hurt it.

Is a painkiller enough?

Occasional use may help, but avoid regular painkillers without a doctor’s advice, especially if you have stomach, kidney or blood pressure issues.

The bottom line

Diwali cleaning is a real physical workload. Plan it, warm up, reach and lift safely, and share the work. If your shoulder does start to hurt, rest it sensibly, then move it gently with warmth. Most strains settle quickly, but persistent pain or stiffness deserves a doctor’s attention.
